Access Transit served their first customer in 2004, and is currently a part of the family of services offered by Saskatoon Transit. Access Transit serves those who are unable to use conventional transit with safety and dignity.

The public is invited to celebrate National AccessAbility Week and Access Transit’s 15^th anniversary on Thursday, May 30, 2019 (10:00.a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Burgers, hotdogs, coffee and games will be part of the event.

Saskatoon Transit will take this opportunity to further break down barriers, promote inclusion while we celebrate Access Transit and their 15 year history in Saskatoon. Both an Access and conventional bus will be on-site to tour and Transit staff will be available to answer questions regarding the family of services provided.

A lot of work is being done to ensure Transit is accessible to all ages and abilities and this celebration is a great opportunity to showcase just that.

Saskatoon Transit’s 2nd Annual Student Art Contest closes Thursday, May 30. Grade three and seven students can submit artwork representing Active Transportation to their teachers by the end of the school day. Teachers must email Saskatoon Transit (transit.services@Saskatoon.ca) by 5:00 p.m to let us know you have a pick-up. 

Two winners will be chosen, one from each grade to have their art displayed on City transit buses throughout the summer.

Grades three and seven were chosen by the school boards to participate in the contest because they both discuss public transportation as part of their curriculum.

Transit is often an overlooked part of Active Transportation, extending all forms of human-powered transportation such as walking, jogging, cycling, skateboarding etc. Watch for the winners and art to be revealed at the end of June.

It's the long weekend and on Victoria Day, Monday, May 20, the City of Saskatoon will have a number of adjusted civic services and altered holiday hours.

The City of Saskatoon is hosting Bike to Work Day YXE on Wednesday, May 15, 2019: an initiative that encourages citizens to choose active transportation and to celebrate those who already use their bicycles to get to and from work and other commitments.

Anyone participating in Bike to Work Day YXE should note the following tips and information:

• Between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., participating businesses and organizations will have Commuter Stations set up. Anyone on a bicycle is invited to stop for coffee, giveaways, or a chance to win prizes! When safe to do so, snap a photo and upload it to social media using the hashtag #BiketoWorkYXE to show us how your commute is going!

• If you live too far from work to bike the entire way, consider taking Saskatoon Transit part of the way. Plan your trip using the Transit app or Google Transit on your desktop. All buses are equipped with front bike racks that are free and easy to use. The bike racks also accommodate fat tires.

The City of Saskatoon and GFL Environmental Inc. are hosting the next HHW Drop-off Day this Sunday, May 5 from 9am - 3:30pm at the Civic Operations Centre at 57 Valley Road.

Residents are invited to drop off their Household Hazardous Waste items for recycling and safe disposal. Common HHW includes aerosols, automotive fluids, batteries, cleaners, cylinders, light bulbs, medications, yard chemicals, and more. These and many other types of hazardous materials should not be put in the garbage or recycling containers, dumped on the ground or poured down the drain.

Event Details

• Location: Civic Operations Centre (57 Valley Road) 
  • ​​​The drop-off site is in the parking lot. Directional signs will be set up and attendants will be on site to guide you.
  • HHW material will no longer be accepted at the previous location at SaskTel Centre.
• Dates: May 5, June 2, July 7, August 11, September 8, October 6, November 3
• Time: 9am - 3:30pm (Gates close at 3:30pm. Arrive before 3pm to avoid the rush.)
• The program is open to Saskatoon residents only – no commercial loads will be accepted. For disposal/recycling of hazardous wastes from non-residential sources, please contact GFL Environmental Inc. at 306-244-9500.

Bus Rapid Transit — or BRT — routes will travel down 1st Avenue downtown and Broadway Avenue in Nutana.  City Council made the decision at its regular business meeting Monday, April 29. 

Council opted for BRT dedicated lanes on 1st Avenue downtown and in mixed traffic for Broadway. 

The downtown north-south BRT route would run in dedicated transit lanes constructed in the centre of 1st Avenue with two centre median stations. One station is proposed to be constructed at the intersection of 1st Avenue and 21st Street and the other at the intersection of 1st Avenue and 23rd Street.

On Broadway, the mixed traffic plan is to construct two pairs of BRT stations on either side of Broadway Avenue at 12th Street and at 9th Street.

Under this option, there are no dedicated BRT lanes along Broadway Avenue, but Transit Signal Priority measures would be installed in traffic signals. The proposed BRT would mix with motor vehicle traffic that typically travels along Broadway Avenue, as well as vehicles entering and leaving on-street parking spaces.

BRT construction is not expected to begin until 2023 with a planned completion in 2025 and an estimated cost of $7.3 million for the Downtown and Nutana portions, subject to approval of funding. 

Downtown Active Transportation Network
Council endorsed a Downtown Active Transportation Network but wants more engagement on the design of sidewalk and cycling infrastructure along approved corridors. 

Fourth Avenue bike lanes to be removed 
City Council also approved a motion to remove the temporary bike lane demonstration on Fourth Avenue by the end of June.
