Broadway Bridge service detours start May 12

Broadway Bridge Rehabilitation

Broadway Bridge rehabilitation work will start on May 12 for approximately six months, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances. This bridge project involves a full closure and includes deck repairs and improvements to the multi-use pathways on both sides.

Starting May 12, Saskatoon Transit will detour eastbound Routes 81, 82, 84, 86, and westbound Route 8 and the Oskāyak High School Route to Victoria Avenue and travel on the Traffic Bridge. Bus stops on Broadway Avenue between 12th and 8th Streets will be relocated two blocks west to Victoria Avenue and marked with temporary signs.

This project also closes two downtown stops on 19th Street near the Broadway Bridge for water main replacements. The 19th Street and 4th Avenue intersection will be reconfigured for safety and to improve bus efficiency between Broadway Avenue and 19th Street—a future Link route. Customers should use nearby stops at 19th Street and 2nd Avenue for eastbound travel and at 3rd Avenue and 20th Street for westbound travel.

Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.

Will parking on Victoria Avenue be affected?

Parking will only be restricted where necessary to accommodate the temporary bus stops (approximately 25 metres per stop).

Will the bikeway on Victoria Avenue be impacted?

No, the bikeway along this section of Victoria Avenue will remain open and unaffected throughout the construction period.

When will regular service resume?

Regular service on Broadway Avenue will resume once construction is complete. Updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Why can’t the detour happen on Main Street or another cross-street to reduce the number of stops that are moved?

Unfortunately, the other cross-streets are too narrow, or the centre medians are too close to the intersection to accommodate the buses' turning radius.

Parking would be restricted along the entire street and cause a major concern for residents and businesses in the area.

Is it reasonable to ask customers to use the bus stops two blocks away?

Our service standard is normally to have most people within a 450-metre walking distance from bus stops and transit services. We do our best to keep as many people as possible within a reasonable walking distance while maintaining safe and efficient operations during construction detours.
