Saskatoon Transit continues to concentrate on improving safety for employees and customers on the buses and at terminals. It has addressed all the initiatives in the Saskatoon Transit Frontline Employee Safety Plan, announced in June 2024, and will present a progress report on Tuesday, April 1, at City Council’s Standing Policy Committee on Transportation meeting.

In response to challenges with violence and aggression on buses and at terminals at the beginning of 2024, Saskatoon Transit management and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 615 committed to prioritizing 17 initiatives to improve workplace safety and foster a culture of safety within Saskatoon Transit.

The plan involves security measures, new processes for reporting incidents and protocols to maintain order on the bus, reduce negative interactions and prepare employees with the skills and resources they need to de-escalate situations. Transit will continue to focus on these initiatives, as many are new, and it can take time for noticeable differences.

Repeated customer surveys throughout 2024 in the Transit app support a correlation between the perception of safety and the number of negative interactions occurring. Saskatoon Transit will use employee feedback about what’s working or not to improve the programs and processes in the plan and continue to support the City’s Community Safety and Well-Being initiatives.

March 18 is Transit Worker Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to acknowledge and express gratitude for the hard work and dedication of all transit workers who keep Canada's public transit systems operational. It is celebrated annually with a whole week of recognition.

Saskatoon Transit connects thousands of residents daily, in all weather conditions, thanks to the commitment of the entire team. From operators on the road to maintenance crews, planners, administration, and customer service staff, every member plays a vital role in keeping the city moving.

The Saskatoon Transit management team proudly celebrates Transit Worker Appreciation Day and invites everyone to thank all the transit workers who connect our community.

You can participate by expressing gratitude to transit workers through acts of kindness, such as saying thank you, writing kind messages, or sharing positive experiences on social media using the hashtag #ThanksTransit and tagging @stoontransit. If you stop by the Downtown Customer Service Centre, messages can be shared on the #ThanksTransit Poster.

While Transit Worker Appreciation Day is designated to highlight transit workers, expressing gratitude and appreciation for their hard work is encouraged year-round. Small gestures of kindness and recognition can make a big impact!

Everyone in Saskatoon is invited to come to one of a series of information events to be held the week of March 17th, 2025, where the future configuration of the Link rapid transit project along College Drive will be displayed and City staff will be available to answer questions. The come-and-go events will be held at various venues along the College corridor and have been scheduled to give several opportunities to come view the designs. This marks a major milestone in the project as construction moves forward toward a goal of a 2028 service launch.

“The College Drive section of the Link route is incredibly important, as it will move a large number of people from, to and through the area,” says Terry Schmidt, General Manager of Transportation and Construction. “These events will give people the opportunity to see where stations will be located as well as give them an idea of how transit, traffic, pedestrians and cyclists will move along College Drive once Link is operational.”
