Traditional Indigenous teachings inspire design of new Transit shelter

Saskatoon Transit and students from Nutana Collegiate worked together with Elder Harry Lafond to create the design of a new bus shelter at 12th Street and Broadway Avenue

“This new artwork is a beautiful addition to the Broadway district that helps tell the history of this land and add to the vibrancy of this important street,” says Mayor Charlie Clark. “Thank you to the students at Nutana Collegiate and Elder Harry Lafond for the work you have put into this project. It will be enjoyed for years to come.”

Following the success of the collaboration with students at Aden Bowman Collegiate on a Métis inspired bus shelter, Saskatoon Transit engaged ten students, this time from the Nutana Industry and Career Education program. The students reflected on Elder Lafond’s teachings and the following words emerged to represent their story:

Life
Beauty
Love
Growth
Connection
Sacrifice
Healing
Regeneration
Plants
Community

Saskatoon Transit’s Bus Shelter Art Project complies with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #79calling upon the government, Aboriginal organizations and the arts community, to develop a reconciliation framework for Canadian heritage and commemoration, including integrating Indigenous history, heritage values and memory practices into Canada’s history.

“This shelter is yet another example of moving toward a more inclusive, responsive and welcoming transit system,” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit. “It is a physical reminder and proof of the commitment the City has made on answering the Calls to Action.”

The artwork was inspired by Elder Harry Lafond’s traditional teachings of Indigenous history and values which inspired the student’s designs. They were then laser cut by Metal Shapes Manufacturing.

“We are of the land, the Creator put us on the land so that we would have life, in return we are to be humble stewards of this land so our grandchildren will have life,” Lafond says.

This project offered a unique way for students to represent ideas of Truth and Reconciliation and express themselves as young people,” says Nicole Stevens, Industry and Career Education teacher at Nutana CollegiateThe students used the seasons, earth, fire, water, the medicine wheel, and tipi as symbols of their story. We are proud of the finished product and feel it not only represents the story of our students, but also reflects Nutana Collegiate and Saskatoon Public Schools’ commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. As we look forward to National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we hope this bus shelter brings a positive sense of community to all who see and use it.”

The public is invited to celebrate National AccessAbility Week and Access Transit’s 15th anniversary on Thursday, May 30, 2019 (10:00.a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Burgers, hotdogs, coffee and games will be part of the event.

Saskatoon Transit will take this opportunity to further break down barriers, promote inclusion while we celebrate Access Transit and their 15 year history in Saskatoon. Both an Access and conventional bus will be on-site to tour and Transit staff will be available to answer questions regarding the family of services provided.

A lot of work is being done to ensure Transit is accessible to all ages and abilities and this celebration is a great opportunity to showcase just that.

Saskatoon Transit’s 2nd Annual Student Art Contest closes Thursday, May 30. Grade three and seven students can submit artwork representing Active Transportation to their teachers by the end of the school day. Teachers must email Saskatoon Transit (transit.services@Saskatoon.ca) by 5:00 p.m to let us know you have a pick-up.

Two winners will be chosen, one from each grade to have their art displayed on City transit buses throughout the summer.

Grades three and seven were chosen by the school boards to participate in the contest because they both discuss public transportation as part of their curriculum.

Transit is often an overlooked part of Active Transportation, extending all forms of human-powered transportation such as walking, jogging, cycling, skateboarding etc. Watch for the winners and art to be revealed at the end of June.

The City of Saskatoon is hosting Bike to Work Day YXE on Wednesday, May 15, 2019: an initiative that encourages citizens to choose active transportation and to celebrate those who already use their bicycles to get to and from work and other commitments.

Anyone participating in Bike to Work Day YXE should note the following tips and information:

  • Between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., participating businesses and organizations will have Commuter Stations set up. Anyone on a bicycle is invited to stop for coffee, giveaways, or a chance to win prizes! When safe to do so, snap a photo and upload it to social media using the hashtag #BiketoWorkYXE to show us how your commute is going!
  • If you live too far from work to bike the entire way, consider taking Saskatoon Transit part of the way. Plan your trip using the Transit app or Google Transit on your desktop. All buses are equipped with front bike racks that are free and easy to use. The bike racks also accommodate fat tires.

Learn more about Bike to Work Day YXE and find resources on cycling in the city at Saskatoon.ca/biketoworkyxe.
