New Transit shelter bridges past & future through Métis art

As part of the City’s commitment to reconciliation, a transit shelter was designed in collaboration with students from Aden Bowman Collegiate and Saskatoon Metis Elder, Senator Nora Cummings to be installed in front of the school.

“This new transit shelter is a wonderful addition to our community and our transit system,” says Mayor Clark. “The inspiring artwork can be enjoyed by everyone, including the neighbouring community and transit riders alike.”

Saskatoon Transit’s Bus Shelter Art Project complies with Call to Action #79, calling upon the government, Aboriginal organizations and the arts community, to develop a reconciliation framework for Canadian heritage and commemoration, including integrating Indigenous history, heritage values and memory practices into Canada’s history.

“This beautiful bus shelter is just one example of what we hope will be many collaborations with the youth in our community,” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit. “This project serves not only as a bus shelter in a location where there otherwise wouldn’t have been one, but also celebrates the rich cultural history of the area.”

The artwork was inspired by Métis history, heritage, values and the memories of Senator Elder Nora Cummings and was laser cut by Metal Shapes Manufacturing.

“It's exciting for us as Métis to have the historic value and contributions of the Road Allowance Métis people acknowledged by the youth of Aden Bowman,” Cummings says. “This area was once a community garden of the Métis and this shelter is a beautiful representation of what once stood on this place.”

“It was an honour for the art students of Aden Bowman and for me to meet with Métis Elder Nora Cummings and learn about the Métis history in this area,” says Tamara Rusnak, Art teacher at Aden Bowman.

Saskatoon Transit completed the first engagement session with Elder Cummings and 19 students at Aden Bowman on May 8, 2018. Elder Cummings spoke specifically to the landscape and the people of the area where Aden Bowman is situated and shared pictures of what the area looked like when she was a young girl.

The students were asked to create original, timeless and commemorative art that celebrates the Métis heritage, history, values and memories of Elder Cummings. They created the art for the bus shelter using inspiration from the engagement session, keeping in mind the functionality and design of the shelter.

How to avoid congestion on Transit buses

September 17, 2018 - 11:45 am

Saskatoon Transit works to anticipate areas of growth and puts a plan in place to accommodate for busy routes. Nonetheless, bus riders are reminded during this time of year that full buses can be expected as students find the routes and times that work best.

Riders are reminded that slight schedule adjustments (less than 10 minutes) and transfers to high-frequency corridors along 8th Street, 22nd Street and Attridge Drive will minimize wait times and more importantly there are more buses per hour which means more capacity for riders and more departure options.

Special high school and university express routes provide enhanced service for students throughout the school year.

Riders are encouraged to use the real-time transit route planning tool on the app called Transit or Google Maps Transit. These apps give departure, arrival and route options.

For help with trip planning please call Transit Customer Service at 306-975-3100.

Return of the Bus Stop Blues! Residents asked for input on improvements

August 23, 2018 - 10:45 am

Saskatoon Transit is asking residents to nominate bus stops for improvements or shelter replacement.

The Bus Stop Blues campaign kicks-off today on Saskatoon Transit Twitter, City of Saskatoon Twitter and the City of Saskatoon’s Facebook page. Over the next four weeks, using the hashtag #BusStopBluesYXE, Saskatoon Transit is asking residents to post a photo and the location of the bus stop where they would like to see improvements.

“We started the Bus Stop Blues campaign last fall and found people really responded to it, so we are once again asking residents where they would like to see improvements made,” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit.

McDonald says Saskatoon Transit has been focusing on improving the Transit customer experience and bus stops and shelters play a big part in that. “Saskatoon Transit is listening and reacting to customer feedback. This is an opportunity for the public to help shape the future of Saskatoon Transit in our city.”

Following the campaign, bus shelters and stops will be classified to see what improvements can be made this year and what improvements may have to wait until the spring.

Saskatoon Transit has allocated funds to improve approximately 23 bus stops throughout the City of Saskatoon.

City encourages residents to beat the heat safely

August 8, 2018 - 4:45 pm

The City is reminding residents to take steps to protect yourself and your family during the prolonged period of hot weather this week.

Water is always an attractive way to stay cool, and we encourage everyone to do this safely. Although, the South Saskatchewan River may provide a tempting option to cool down, swimming is prohibited. The river is dangerous as it has many hazards, such as changing currents and unstable riverbeds.

The City offers safe outdoor water options, including 29 paddling pools, 20 spray pads and four outdoor pools located throughout Saskatoon. Be sure you come prepared with appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and drinking water to get through the day safely.  Spray pads and paddling pools are always FREE to visit, admission rates for outdoor pools apply.  For hours of operation, visit saskatoon.ca/outdoorpools

Other things to consider during extreme heat:

Pet Wellness
On warm summer days, it’s important to keep your pets safe and comfortable. Ensure your pet has plenty of fresh water to drink and look out for indicators of heat stress including rapid panting. Never leave pets in parked cars for any amount of time and offer a means for your pet to cool off such as a wading pool or damp towel. For more information on how to keep your pet safe this summer read our Pet Wellness Guide, or contact the SPCA or your local veterinarian.

Transit Safe Bus Program
As always, Saskatoon Transit offers the Safe Bus Program designed to assist anyone, of any age, that needs immediate shelter or needs to contact emergency services. If you are in duress, simply and safely flag down a bus or go to a parked bus. Transit operators can contact emergency services directly through the on-bus radio system and will give the person in need a safe place to wait.

Working Safe
City staff who work outdoors are encouraged to take necessary actions as the humidex rises throughout the week such as drinking extra water, increased breaks out of the sun and modified work duties to prevent heat illness and return home safely. For safety tips and guidelines for employees working in hot conditions, visit the Government of Saskatchewan’s Working Outdoors page.

Smart yard and garden watering
During heat waves, there is increased water usage. The City encourages residents to be water wise by watering your lawn early in the morning and skip windy days to minimize evaporation. Smart watering helps the environment and can save you money during hot summer months. Follow these quick lawn care tips to be more efficient with your water and learn more ways to be water wise.

Prepare for changes in weather
Hot temperatures can result in changes to the weather so be prepared and be safe.

In the event of a leisure facility closure, the City will issue a service alert. Residents can find information regarding service alerts at saskatoon.ca/servicealerts.

Since heavy summer downpours are a leading cause of basement floods, you may want to take a few minutes to stormproof in advance. Quick checks include making sure your downspouts are down and pointing away from your home, and that your sump pump and back water valves are functioning properly. Learn more about flood-proofing.
