TRC Calls to Action and Sisters in Spirit Day inspire new Indigenous bus shelter art

October 4, 2023 - 7:09 am

To coincide with Sisters in Spirit Day on October 4, Saskatoon Transit partnered with talented Indigenous artist Vanessa Hyggen, to unveil a new bus shelter at Preston Avenue and Adelaide Street. This is Saskatoon Transit’s fifth bus shelter in commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #79 (PDF).

This year’s bus shelter was created in collaboration with family and community members affected by the tragedy of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), as well as Two-Spirit individuals. Vanessa skillfully integrated the shared thoughts and emotions of the group. Her aim was to pay tribute to and raise awareness of the issues faced, provide a healing space, and encourage community members to speak out. The bus shelter stands as a tribute to the lives affected by this tragic issue, a call for justice, and a symbol of hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Scan the QR code on the front of the bus shelter to be directed to a webpage page that includes the full story behind the artwork, information on the committee members that inspired the piece, and previous bus shelter art projects.

For more information, visit: saskatoon.ca/trc-bus-shelter-art

The other four Saskatoon Transit bus shelters displaying Indigenous artwork are located at the following locations:

  • Confederation Drive & Massey Drive
  • Rusholme Road at E.D. Feehan High School
  • Broadway Avenue & 12 Street
  • Clarence Avenue at Aden Bowman Collegiate

Faith Bosse, artwork committee member says: "I'm so thankful to have worked alongside the talented artists & family members who helped piece together this beautiful artwork over the past few months. As the daughter of an MMIW, it means so much to me to have something representing all of the families & our loved ones we have lost.”

Paul Trottier, artwork committee member says: “This bus shelter helps to lift the veil of silence, it expresses the voice of those who are missing, those who cannot be heard. Those who are missing are a part of someone, a life, a future, a human being.  We want our loved ones back.”

Vanessa Hyggen, Indigenous artist says: “I've been honoured to work with the families who shared their stories with me. I carried their words and stories on my heart for about 3 weeks before I began to draw. Once I started to draw though, I felt like the direction of the piece all came together. I met with the committee a couple of times, received feedback, then worked to incorporate the feedback. This piece is a story, and a feeling, and I can only hope that it will help to elevate their voices, and raise the issue of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls and Two -Spirit People.”

Charlie Clark, Mayor says: “Coinciding with the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, I am proud to be able to unveil this new shelter. The Bus Shelter Art projects placed around the city provide meaningful art displays that tie together learning, understanding, and steps towards reconciliation. I am very grateful for all of the community partners and city staff who helped make this happen. The willingness of community members to support our work in responding to the TRC Calls to Action continues to be invaluable.”

Jim Puffalt, Director of Saskatoon Transit says: “We hope this bus shelter serves as an inclusive space where everyone, regardless of their background, feels valued and protected. With Vanessa and the committee members, we have crafted a beacon of awareness and a tribute to the strength of Indigenous cultures.”

Navigating full buses: Tips for students during back-to-school

September 15, 2023 - 5:03 pm

Published On
Body

With the school year in full swing, Saskatoon Transit is experiencing typical increased demand, resulting in some buses reaching full capacity across the city, including Evergreen, Stonebridge, and Rosewood.

Full buses are inconvenient and stressful for students and parents alike. To address this increased demand, Saskatoon Transit is running larger capacity articulating buses on the routes with high schools and post-secondary institutions and deploying three additional buses as needed. Transit will continue to monitor the situation over the coming weeks.

When a bus is full, the transit operator logs the information location, route, time, and date. The head sign will read “Full Bus” and the operator will drive past bus stops - even when riders are waiting - until there is space for more people.

All available resources are being used with schedules being adjusted to accommodate, where possible. To help alleviate the situation and ensure a smoother experience for everyone involved, we offer some guidance:

  • Departure time flexibility. Schedules can be tight, but if students have some flexibility in their daily routines, consider taking an earlier or later bus when the bus may be less crowded. The bus that drops students off just prior to the start of class tends to be busier than the earlier or next bus.
  • Use tracking and watch for service alerts. Saskatoon Transit has real-time transit tracking through third-party apps like Transit, or Google Maps on desktop. Real-time transit tracking shows you where your bus is and when the next bus arrives, which limits wait times at bus stops. Pin your preferred routes for service alert push notifications.
  • Be prepared to board. Having your fare ready and/or app open can help speed up the process and avoid any boarding delays.
  • Find your spot. Quickly find an open seat or standing area in the event all seats are occupied
  • Keep on moving. As riders exit the bus, passengers left standing are to continue moving back towards the rear of the bus to fill empty spaces or seats. This helps the operator understand bus capacity.
  • Remove backpacks. Make space for people. If the bus is busy, do not take up available seating with bags or belongings. Keep items in your lap and feet on the floor.

Saskatoon Transit prepared for full buses as students head back to class

September 1, 2023 - 5:53 pm

Published On
Body

Saskatoon Transit anticipates buses filling up on busy routes during peak commute times beginning Tuesday, September 5 as students head back to school and summer vacations wrap up.  Saskatoon Transit is prepared to provide a reliable service heading into the busiest season of the year, having made many improvements to its maintenance and operations over the past year.

When possible, larger capacity articulating buses will be used on the routes with high schools and post-secondary institutions, and three additional buses will be standing by to be deployed as needed. At this time last year, ridership numbers compared to pre-pandemic rates and some routes experienced full buses.

Tips for public transit riders

  1. Adjust your departure time. Busier routes will have some increased frequency at peak times. If your regular bus is nearly full when you ride in August, consider taking the earlier or later bus to avoid a full bus. The bus that drops students off just prior to the start of class tends to be busier than the earlier or next bus.
  2. Use tracking and watch for service alerts. Saskatoon Transit has real-time tracking through third party apps like Transit and Google Maps on desktop. Real-time transit tracking shows you where your bus is and when the next bus arrives, which limits wait times at bus stops. Pin your preferred routes for service alert push notifications.
  3. Be prepared to board. Have your fare ready, app open and be ready to quickly find a seat.
  4. Remove backpacks. Make space for people.

When a bus is full, the head sign will read “Full Bus” and the operator will drive past bus stops - even when riders are waiting - until there is space for more people. During peak times, more than 80 buses are running to get people to their destinations. Real time tracking and ongoing communication with the bus helps Saskatoon Transit staff determine where more service is needed.

Student discounts

You can now purchase discounted high school and post-secondary passes on your mobile device with TGo and Transit apps. Post-secondary students must show their proof of enrollment at the Customer Service Centre downtown for the discount to be available in the app. Students attending the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Saskatchewan receive a U-PASS included with tuition. Learn more about mobile tickets for students at saskatoontransit/student.

Downtown terminal Rehabilitation – May 8-14

May 5, 2023 - 3:11 pm

Attention all Saskatoon Transit users!

Please be aware the Downtown Transit Terminal will undergo a short-term construction project from May 8-14, 2023. The rehabilitation work aims to fix the structural deficiencies of the road surface and missing sections of curb at the terminal.

The project has been scheduled in May to minimize the impact on transit riders and residents. The terminal will be moved along 3rd Avenue from 23rd Street to 24th Street with minimal effects on transit service and schedules. Wayfinding will be available to help locate transfers and buses, and transit staff will be on hand to assist.

Please note the sidewalks on both sides of the existing terminal will stay open, and the Transit Customer Service Centre will maintain regular hours of operation. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make improvements.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at transit.services@saskatoon.ca or 306.975.3100. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
