Saskatoon Transit is asking residents to nominate bus stops for improvements or replacement.  

“Connectivity is the driving force of Saskatoon Transit; whether it’s getting our riders where they need to go or gaining insight for new advancements,” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit. “We have been focusing on improving the Transit customer experience and bus stops and shelters play a big part in that.”  

The Bus Stop Blues campaign is in its third year and kicks-off today, August 27, on Saskatoon Transit Twitter, City of Saskatoon Twitter and the City of Saskatoon’s Facebook page. Over the next four weeks, using the hashtag #BusStopBluesYXE, Saskatoon Transit is asking residents to post a photo, location and reason why they would like to see improvements.  

Over the past two years 42 bus stops have seen improvements, many of which came from Bus Stop Blues submissions. 

“We want people to know we are listening and reacting to their feedback,” says McDonald. “This is an opportunity for the public to help shape the future of Saskatoon Transit in our city.”  

Following the campaign, bus shelters and stops will be classified to see what improvements can be made this year and what improvements may have to wait until the spring. 

This year, Saskatoon Transit has budget to improve approximately 23 bus stops throughout the City of Saskatoon. 

Saskatoon Transit is once again offering free system-wide transit service during Folkfest operating hours for all 2019 Folkfest Passport holders. This quick and easy service is offered to passengers who show their Folkfest Passport when boarding during the following hours:  

• Thursday, August 15:          3:50 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. 
• Friday, August 16:               3:50 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. 
• Saturday, August 17:           2:15 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. 

All route maps specific to Folkfest service with stop locations can be found on SaskatoonTransit.ca. 

Service schedule:  

Routes 150 and 151 will run every 15 minutes; 

Route 152 (load and go shuttle service); 

Route 153 (load and go shuttle service).

The City of Saskatoon and GFL Environmental Inc. are hosting the next HHW Drop-off Day this Sunday, August 11 from 9am - 3:30pm at the Civic Operations Centre at 57 Valley Road.

Residents are invited to drop off their Household Hazardous Waste materials for recycling and safe disposal. Common HHW includes aerosols, automotive fluids, batteries, cleaners, cylinders, light bulbs, medications, yard chemicals, and more. These and many other types of hazardous materials should not be put in the garbage or recycling containers, dumped on the ground or poured down the drain as they pose significant health and environmental risks and can cause injury to workers or damage to equipment.

Event Details

• Location: Civic Operations Centre (57 Valley Road) 
  • ​​​The drop-off site is in the parking lot. Directional signs will be set up and attendants will be on site to guide you.
  • HHW material will no longer be accepted at the previous location at SaskTel Centre.
• Dates: August 11, September 8, October 6, November 3
• Time: 9am - 3:30pm (Gates close at 3:30pm, so please arrive before 3pm to avoid the rush.)
• The program is open to Saskatoon residents only – no commercial loads will be accepted. For disposal/recycling of hazardous wastes from non-residential sources, please contact GFL Environmental Inc. at 306-244-9500.

Ask the Wizard! To avoid potentially long line-ups and wait times, residents are also encouraged to use the Waste Wizard tool to search their items and find the most convenient disposal information.

The Saskatoon EX Parade takes place today, Tuesday, August 6, 2019. Road and parking restrictions will be in place on the downtown parade route from 10:00 a.m. until the parade concludes (approximately noon).

Spadina Crescent East from 24th Street East to Warburton Street will be the parade staging area and will be closed from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 12:00 (noon) p.m. This closure will include Queen Street east of 7th Avenue North.

The parade will follow the traditional route:

• Begins at 24th Street East and Spadina Crescent East
• West on 24th Street East to 4th Avenue North
• South on 4th Avenue North to 20th Street East
• East on 20th Street East to Spadina Crescent East
• North on Spadina Crescent East to 24th Street East

The parade will impact some Transit routes and bus stops on the following routes: Route 808, 4 City Centre and 5 City Centre. Transit service alerts, regarding detours or temporary bus stop closures, and real-time bus locations are available on the app called Transit or Google Transit on desktop.

Please respect detours, signs and barriers before and during the parade.

Saskatoon Transit has partnered with the Saskatoon EX to offer free Transit service to Superpass holders during the week of the Exhibition, August 6-11, 2019. Superpass holders can ride free every day on regular Transit routes to and from the exhibition grounds by showing their Superpass when boarding a Saskatoon Transit bus. Children 10 & under ride FREE all-day Wednesday and older adults (60+) ride FREE all-day Thursday on regular bus routes.

Some easy ways to get to the EX on Saskatoon Transit:

Service on Sunday night will be extended with three special service routes from the Exhibition loop on the west side of Lorne Avenue, just south of Ruth Street.

Bus #1 – to Downtown and Lawson Mall departing at 9:30 p.m., 10:15 p.m., 11:00 p.m. and 11:45 p.m.

Bus #2 – to Market Mall, Centre Mall and University Heights departing at 9:45 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.

Bus #3 – to Confederation and Downtown departing at 9:15 p.m., 10:00 p.m., 10:45 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Saskatoon Transit will continue to operate as scheduled during the Saskatoon EX. Residents are encouraged to use the app called Transit on their mobile device and Google Transit on desktop to plan their trip to the Saskatoon EX and for Transit service alerts, real-time bus locations and arrivals.

Travel on Saskatoon Transit to and from the Canada Day celebrations at Diefenbaker Park on Monday, July 1, 2019. Routes 1 and 19 will be running in the vicinity of Diefenbaker Park on their regular Holiday Service until 9:00 p.m. Normal fares will apply. 

Fifteen minutes after the firework show ends, you can catch a free ride home with Saskatoon Transit. Four special routes will leave Diefenbaker Park from a temporary stop on the east side of St. Henry Avenue, between Exhibition Grounds Road and Ruth Street. Buses will follow a designated route, however, drivers will stop on request at bus stops or locations where it’s safe to stop. 

The four special service routes include: 

Bus #1 – will travel to the Downtown Terminal, then continue on 2nd Avenue and Warman Road and will end at the Lawson Heights Mall Terminal 

Bus #2 – will travel to the Downtown Terminal, then continue on 22nd Street and will end at the Confederation Mall Terminal 

Bus #3 – will travel via Ruth Street to the Market Mall Terminal, then continue on Taylor Street and Acadia Drive and will end at the Centre Mall Terminal 

Bus #4 – will travel via 8th Street to the Centre Mall Terminal, then continue on to Central Avenue and 115th Street and will end at the bus stop at Berini Drive and 115th Street 

Access Transit will extend its service hours until midnight on Canada Day so that customers can take in the firework show at Diefenbaker Park. Trips must be booked in advance as per normal booking procedures. Access Transit customers are reminded that subscriptions do not apply on statutory holidays. 

Saskatoon Transit unveiled two new pieces of artwork for the 2nd Saskatoon Transit Student Art Contest. The contest was open to all grade 3 and 7 students in Saskatoon.  

“This is a great opportunity for elementary school students to see a piece of artwork, created by someone just like them, on the side of a transit bus. This is a way to honour the creative work they do and be a part of the growing Active Transportation culture in Saskatoon” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit.   

Grade 7 student, Avery from St. Philip School and grade 3 student, Kinsey from Saskatoon French School are this year’s best of show winners. The winning pieces were chosen by the Remai Modern’s Learning and Engagement Manager, Kelly Van Damme based on how well they reflected the “Active Transportation” theme. 

“Walking, and sometimes cycling, is the beginning and end of each transit trip,” says Jay Magus, Director of Transportation. “By combining an active trip with a transit trip, people are able to make trips that are farther than they may be able to walk or bike.”  

“Students can be incredibly insightful, and we can learn a lot from the creative ways in which they communicate that insight,” said Darcie Lich, the coordinator who oversees fine arts education at Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools. “The ideas they express through their art can be good lessons for us on how to be more active, how to be more engaged in our communities and how to make simple little decisions that help us live more sustainably. Thank you to all students who participated, and congratulations to the winners” 

The winning artwork will be displayed on the side of Saskatoon Transit buses traveling across Saskatoon throughout the summer. 

  “At Saskatoon Public Schools, we encourage our students and families to explore active transportation for their commute to school. The Student Art Contest complements this work by allowing our students to creatively explore and envision their community while learning about active transportation,” said Paul Janzen, Superintendent of Education for Saskatoon Public Schools.   

“This art contest helps plant the seed at a young age of how public transportation works as part of Active Transportation and that it is a viable and sustainable option in our city” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit.
